Library Policies
These important Library policies are discussed in great detail on other tabs in this Student Resource Guide.
Intellectual Freedom
MCCCD Intellectual Freedom Statement
|
MCCCD Libraries affirm the concept of intellectual freedom and the right of library users to use materials, facilities or services without intimidation. In supporting library users' rights to privacy and confidentiality, MCCCD Libraries are adhering to the "right to read" implicitly guaranteed in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, the Arizona Revised Statutes 41-1354 (Privacy of User's Records), and the American Library Association (ALA) Library Bill of Rights. As stated in the ALA Code of Ethics, libraries "protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted." This includes circulation records, database searches, reference interviews, interlibrary loan records, and all other personally identifiable uses of library materials, facilities or services. An individual's use of library materials or services will not be disclosed to anyone other than that individual, to persons authorized by that individual, or to library personnel acting within the scope of their duties, except as required by law as outlined in "Law Enforcement Inquiries: Guidelines for MCCD Library Staff." Approved 4/29/03 by the District Libraries Council |
Other Library Use Policies
All users of the PVCC Library, including students, staff, faculty, and community borrowers, must abide by these policies. Failure to do so can result in ejection from the Library, suspension of library and/or campus privileges, or arrest. Please refer to specific consequences at the bottom of the policies for additional information.
Appropriate Behavior
Any library user who exhibits behavior that is loud, aggressive, inappropriate to a library setting, or that otherwise creates a disturbance will be asked to leave the Library.
Cell Phone & Phone Usage
As a courtesy to other library users, please turn cell phone ringtones down or set them to vibrate. If you must take a call, please complete it quietly. Library phones may be used at the discretion of staff for college business only.
Public phones are available at each end of the E Building. There is a phone, with outside access, available for student use on the 2nd floor of the KSC building
"Children (younger than 18) may not attend any class unless they are officially registered for the class. Children will not be allowed on campus unless participating in an authorized college program or under the supervision of an adult."
Based on this regulation, the following policy is in effect and should be enforced by all library personnel.
-
Children under 18 years of age, unless participating in an authorized college program, may not be left unattended in the Library.
Copyright Law
Copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the making of copies of copyrighted material. Any person copying such material is liable for any infringement.
Food and Drink
Food and drink are allowed in the Library - just be careful and do not leave a mess. Trash receptacles are found throughout the Library just waiting to be used.
Personal Items in the Library
The library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
College Safety will pick up any items left unattended for more than 30 minutes.
Quiet Atmosphere
Users of the Library expect to have a reasonably quiet study space. Please conduct group sessions in our group study rooms (NE corner), and restrict lengthy conversations to the hallway. The Quiet Zone near the study rooms is set aside for quiet individual study.
The Reserve collection includes the following types of materials:
-
Textbooks (occasionally)
-
Required readings
-
Past exams
-
Class notes
-
Specific videos
These items are placed on reserve by request of faculty only. The faculty member designates the circulation period (2 hours, overnight, 3 day, etc.) for each item.
Photocopied materials that an instructor wishes to use in multiple courses or ongoing semesters require permission from the owner of the copyright. A copy of the letter granting permission will be kept on file in the library and must accompany the photocopies at the time of submission for reserve. In certain instances a copy of the faculty member's request for permission will be accepted pending receipt of the appropriate permission.
Your Student ID/Library Card is required to borrow materials at Reserves. Reserve items are checked out to PVC students only. Most reserve items are limited to use in the library. Instructors designate loan periods and loan restrictions and only your instructor may permit exceptions.
Resources/Supplies
Use of supplies and resources by library patrons will be monitored by the Library staff. Excessive or inappropriate use will result in the access to the supplies or resources being denied.
Student Precedence
Although our Library is open to the public, PVCC students shall take precedence in the use of resources, including computers, study tables, and study rooms. Non-students are asked not to use computers during busy times and instruction sessions.
Study Rooms
Small study rooms and group study rooms are available for students on a first come first serve basis.
The group study rooms are for two or more students only and are equipped with white boards, televisions and DVD/VHS players.
Private, fee-based tutoring in the study rooms are available for PVCC students only.
U.S.A. Patriot Act - WARNING: Under Section 215 of the federal USA Patriot Act (Public Law 107-56), records of books and other materials you borrow from this library may be obtained by federal agents. This law also prohibits librarians from informing you if records about you have been obtained by federal agents. Questions about this policy should be directed to Attorney General at the Department of Justice, Washington, DC.
