Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending Grants: A hotspot is an area where users can access the Internet using Wi-Fi from a small device with a cell phone data plan. Wi-Fi Hotspot Lending grants are grants of $4,000 each to be used to provide people with free, 24/7 access to the Internet in areas of limited Internet availability in order to allow people to meet their information needs in new ways.
The 2020 LSTA Guidelines will include wi-fi hotspot lending mini-grants of $4,000 each. This funding may be used towards starting or maintaining a lending program. The guidelines are made available in November of this year and the applications are due in early March 2020. Funding for awarded libraries is available in May 2020. Libraries self-select the service provider based on available coverage and determine the scope of the lending period to meet local needs.
In this cycle that just ended, 12 Arizona libraries were awarded subgrants. These grants were $4,000.00 each to go towards the purchase of devices as well as data service. About half of the recipients had existing hotspot lending programs funding by the State Library's subgrants, the other half were new programs. GWCC was the first college library to participate in this subgrant program for hotspots.
