Activism is something that happens in every community in so many different ways, yet it often goes unacknowledged or unrecognized. Sylwia begins with her personal story of survival under communist rule in Poland. From that foundation, this learn-shop encourages participants to identify leadership qualities in others through the use of art and writing to describe leaders and activists in their own life. Students will work on the activities which help them gain a vision of the importance of community activism and the role they can play in contributing to activism and change through art. Students will engage in a unique and innovative way as they reflect and gain a greater understanding about leadership, history, managements and basic economic principles. WHEN: Monday, March 3, 9-10:15 am – The Buxton Library SE Corner

Shawnee’s love for Africa and its people inspired her educational and career endeavors. As a Commodities Manager with Food for the Hungry, she was a first responder to the earthquake devastation of Haiti—she reflects that intense sorrow led to focused survival where Haitian women became the beacon of food disbursement within families. Working as FH’s gender-based violence expert in the South Sudan, she knows how violence almost certainly means people will be displaced, often in shelters where overcrowding and competition for resources means young girls and boys will be used as a bartering system for goods. Her presentation “Beauty for Ashes” focuses on these cases as well as her non- profit work and reflects on the resilience and dignity of women on a global scale. When: Thursday, February 6, 10: 30-11:30 am – The Buxton Library SE Corner – Anchor Course: CRE101, Woodbeck
