#Blacklivesmatter: A Passion for Justice
This event was held Tuesday, February 23rd @ 6:30 pm in the Buxton Library SE Corner - Speaker Reverend Reginald Walton of the Phillips Memorial CME Church & Phoenix Black Lives Matter Movement
For the past decade, social justice educators have decried the school-to-prison pipeline: a series of interlocking policies—whitewashed, often scripted curriculum that neglects the contributions and struggles of people of color; zero tolerance and racist suspension and expulsion policies; and high-stakes tests—that funnel kids from the classroom to the cellblock. With the recent high-profile deaths of young African Americans, a “school-to-grave pipeline” is coming into focus. The Black Lives Matter movement inspires us to fight the school-to-grave pipeline as an example of structural racism. Existing anti-racism initiatives tend to focus, often exclusively, on internal or interpersonal diversity efforts. However, personal relationships must build a bridge to end structural relationships of bias and racism within our society and this exciting forum will address those confines in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. #BlackLivesMatter: A serious and engaged conversation full of grace, wit and information ensued on Tuesday evening. Reverend Reginald Walton masterfully guided the conversation through many aspects of the #BlackLivesMatter movement highlighting the need to hold institutions accountable where racism is concerned. Students, staff, faculty and the community came together in a positive and uplifting manner where every voice was heard.
