What is a NAICS Industry Code?
A NAICS industry code is part of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), which is used to classify business establishments based on their economic activities. This system was developed by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to ensure comparability in business statistics across North America1.
Each NAICS code consists of six digits, where each digit or group of digits represents a specific industry sector or sub-sector. For example:
- The first two digits represent the economic sector.
- The third digit represents the subsector.
- The fourth digit represents the industry group.
- The fifth digit represents the NAICS industry.
- The sixth digit designates the national industry.
NAICS codes are used by federal statistical agencies for collecting, analyzing, and publishing data related to the U.S. economy1. They are also commonly used by businesses and government agencies for various administrative, regulatory, and contracting purposes2.

How to locate your NAICS Code Title for your Industry.
1. Choose an appropriate industry using the NACIS Code Drill-Down Table.
2. For example, you might want to setup a mobile street food service.
3. So your operation would fall under the Accommodation and Food Services industry.
4. So click on the NACIS Code Drill-Down Table and locate Accommodation and Food Services and Special Food Services.
5. Under Special Food Services locate Mobile Food Services and click on it.
6. Note the 2022 title and NAICS code.
7. Next go to the database PROQUEST CENTRAL and enter Mobile Food Services 2024 in the search box.
8. And locate the latest report, in this case, Mobile Food Services - Quarterly Update 6/17/2024 from First Research. -

2. Locate and click on First Research in Mergent Online.
3. To Search for Reports enter a title or report text, and if you get NO RESULTS then use the Browse button to bring up an index of D&B Hoovers Industries and choose and click on the appropriate business industry you are looking for. In this case, we would choose Food and Beverage and 164 - Restaurants and Bars. Go up to the upper right hand corner and click on "View Results".
4. You will then get various First Research Reports which you might want to consider? But, as you go through them you will eventually get to the Mobile Food Services First Research Report and proceed to check it out!
