Start-Ups
In general, start-ups are characterized by novel business models and a heavy reliance on venture capital, although that picture changed in the early 2000s. One of the biggest challenge start-ups (Internet-based or not) faced in the post-dot-com era was providing a viable business model that could show that the company would become a profitable venture. A second major challenge was the economic downturn of 2008–2009, which dried up a lot of capital formerly available for loans and investments. The volatile stock market of the early 2010s also made initial public offerings—perhaps the Holy Grail of capital raising for start-up companies—more challenging for new, unproven companies.
