Pre-Med Blueprint Guide

Choosing a Major

The truth is when you pursue a pre-med path you can choose any undergraduate major as long as you complete the medical school pre-requisite classes. The biggest thing to put into consideration when choosing a major, is "what am I passionate about?". If you are not the biggest fan of chemistry do not feel pressured to pick a chemistry or any other science major because it fits the textbook pre-med stereotype. Carefully consider the areas you love and want to venture into while pursuing your dream of medicine.

Medical schools are looking for well-rounded students who will make great physicians and change the landscape of medicine forever. Every cycle over half of medical school applicants are biology majors, yet they do not make up for half of the matriculated population. Medical schools do not focus a lot on your selected major if you completed their require prerequisites but understanding your odds of acceptance, what makes you stand out, what you are passionate about and most importantly what will prepare you best for entering medical school and becoming a physician.

The reason for biological sciences being one of the most selected majors among pre-med students is the ease it creates with a pathway to medical school. When selecting a major like business or humanities you need to take into consideration that the sciences and other electives needed to be accepted into medical school are not ingrained in the degree requirements. This means more time figuring out what classes are needed outside of your degree and possibly more semesters making up for the additional coursework you need to take on.
