About the Buxton Library: Policies

Library Conduct & Community Standards

The Buxton Library is a shared area for study, research, instruction, and computer use.  We ask that all those using the library follow a few guidelines to ensure all patrons have a peaceful experience. Thank you for doing your part to maintain our Community Standards.


  • Student academic work takes precedence over all other use of these facilities.

  • Phone calls are allowed in the Library, except in and around the Quiet Area. If a call becomes disruptive, you may be asked to take your call outside the Library.

  • Only service animals are allowed in the Library.

  • The use of Tobacco, including E-Cigarettes, is prohibited on MCCCD property. 

  • Be respectful of the library community and refrain from disruptive behavior or behavior that can be interpreted as creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

  • When listening to audio or watching a video, please use headphones and keep the volume to a minimum.

  • Please refrain from sitting on tables or placing your feet on the furniture. 

  • Destroying or defacing library items in any way is strictly prohibited. (A.R.S. 13-1602)

  • Patrons must wear shoes, shirts, and attire appropriate for a public place.

  • While short naps are ok, camping/loitering is prohibited. (A.R.S. 13-2905 Loitering)

  • While children are welcome in the Library, they must always be accompanied by an adult and never left unsupervised. 

  • Weapons are strictly prohibited on MCCCD property. (ARS §§13-105.11, 13-105.13, 13-105.17, 13-3101.7)

  • While food and drink are allowed in the Library, please avoid spills and messes, and clean up after yourself.

  • Food delivery directly to the Library is prohibited. 

  • Please keep your belongings with you at all times. The Library is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Library staff members are authorized to interpret and apply these Community Standards. To maintain these Community Standards, uncooperative patrons will be asked to vacate the Library, and if deemed necessary, College Police will be contacted.

Using the Library

Students, Faculty, Staff, and Community Borrowers are highly encouraged to check out library materials from our collection. Before doing so, please read about your options as a library patron.

Checking Out Materials

Students, Staff, and Faculty can check out up to twenty (20) library materials at one time, with five (5) of those items being DVD/Blu-ray and one (1) culture pass. Community Borrowers can check out up to five (5) library materials, with three (3) being DVD/Blu-ray and one (1) culture pass. 

Returning Materials

Please return library materials on time and in their original condition. Items not returned in their original condition may be charged a replacement fee. Library users with overdue materials will receive an email notification to their Maricopa email account.

To return your library materials, you may do so at the following locations:

1. Return all items to the library during operating hours. Visit our website for current hours.

2. Return BOOKS ONLY (no media or technology, please!) to the:

                       a. Book drop in the E-building hallway.

                b. Book-drop outside the A building, located near the flagpoles.

Renewing Materials

Patrons can renew their library materials by:

  • Calling the Circulation Desk: 602.787.7200
  • In-person by visiting the Circulation Desk
  • Online via the MyAccount/Renew link in the library catalog  (NOTE: Community Borrowers are currently unable to renew items online)

Buxton Library Classroom Usage Policy

The Buxton Library classroom is a dedicated space designed to support information literacy instruction and one-time educational activities in line with the library’s mission to foster learning and student success across disciplines. The following guidelines outline the availability and appropriate use of this space:
 

Room Availability:
 

  1. Library Instruction in a Credit Course:
     
    • The classroom is available for scheduled instruction with a Librarian during credit courses that discuss information literacy and library instruction sessions. Faculty members may reserve the room for classes that require information literacy instruction, research support, or other library-related academic activities.
       
  2. Educational Student Events (Hosted by Campus Partners):
     
    • The classroom may be reserved for educational events, workshops, and student success initiatives hosted by campus partners. These events must align with the educational mission of the college and enhance students’ academic and career development.
       

3. Drop-in Student Availability:

    • The classroom may be used for drop-in student use, including study group sessions, individual studying, practice speech sessions with other students, and related needs.
       

Room Unavailability:

The library classroom is not available for the following types of bookings:

 

  • Club Meetings: Student or faculty club meetings should seek alternative spaces on campus.
     
  • Committee Meetings: College or department committee meetings must utilize other conference rooms or campus facilities.
     
  • Monthly Scheduled Staff Meetings: Recurring internal staff meetings, such as department or unit meetings, are not permitted in the classroom.
     

The Buxton Library reserves the right to prioritize reservations for events and sessions directly tied to student instruction, learning outcomes, and the academic mission of the college.

Study Rooms

Library study rooms are for the exclusive use of current PVCC students and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Study rooms are for study purposes only and are not to be used for lounging or storing belongings. The group study rooms (larger study rooms) are for two or more students. If a group requires a study room with only one occupant, that occupant will be asked to relocate.

The Buxton Library has eight study rooms in total:                              

  • Three small study rooms = two people or less
  • Five large study rooms  = two or more people

Unattended Belongings

For your safety and security, we kindly request that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times while in the Library. Please be aware that the Library cannot accept liability for any lost or stolen items. Any unattended belongings will be handed over to the College Police at the end of each day.

Additionally, please note that closing procedures will commence 15 minutes before the stated closing time. For instance, if the Library closes at 7 pm, closing procedures will begin promptly at 6:45 pm. College Police personnel will be on-site to facilitate the smooth closure of the building.

Noise

The Library encourages student collaboration and group discussion. Except for the Quiet Zone, a conversational volume is appropriate in the remaining areas of the Library, including group study rooms. 


Quiet Area

The Quiet Area is the silent zone of the Library, which is designated for those who need a quiet place to study. Conversations are not permitted in the Quiet Area. Phones must be turned to vibrate, and all other sounds must be muted.

Important Note: If you're in a study room near the Quiet Area, please be mindful of your noise levels by lowering your voice. The study rooms are not soundproof.


Cellphone Use

Phone calls are allowed in the Library, except in and around the Quiet Area. If a call becomes disruptive, you may be asked to take your call outside of the Library.

Computers, Printing, & Wi-Fi

Library Computers

The Buxton Library @ PVCC adheres to the MCCCD Technology Resource Standardsestablished for all campus computer users. These standards apply to the Library's open lab and devices logged onto PVCC's Wi-Fi network. Educational use will take priority when computers are in high demand. Tampering with computer hardware or software is strictly prohibited.


Laptops/Wi-Fi Hotspots/Calculators

Printing/Copying

Please refer to the Student Pay for Print webpage for more information on printing while on campus.

*Under U.S. Copyright Law, the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the reproduction of copyrighted materials. Any person copying such material is liable for any infringement. 

Important Note: Printing is currently unavailable to students from other MCCCD colleges. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Food & Drink

Food and drink are allowed in the Library, except for the library classroom. Food delivery directly to the Library is prohibited.

  • Drinks in covered containers.

  • Please be mindful of others and avoid food with pungent odors.

  • Please dispose of any leftovers or trash in trash bins and recycle whenever possible.

  • Remember to report spills immediately at the nearest service desk for easy clean-up.

  • Be mindful and considerate of other library users. The Buxton Library is your Library--please help keep it clean and comfortable.

Children

In accordance with Maricopa Administrative Regulation 2.4.10, individuals under 18 years old are restricted from campus premises unless participating in an approved college program or are supervised by an adult. However, children under adult supervision are permitted to enter the Library. Please be advised that our library materials are selected with a college-aged audience in mind.

Public Access Computer

The designated public access computer is available for use by members of the public who are not community borrowers, subject to the following guidelines:

Usage Limits

  • Each patron is permitted to use the computer for a maximum of 2 hours per day.
  • Once a user's session is complete, they must promptly vacate the computer to allow others to use it.

Printing Limitations

  • B&W printing is restricted to 20 pages per day per individual
