What is Psychiatric Nursing?

Psychiatric nursing is recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as a specialized area of nursing practice. Psychiatric nursing incorporates the science of nursing based on clinical assessment skills and nursing diagnoses with the art of “therapeutic use of self” in establishing a professional, therapeutic relationship based on empathy. Psychiatric nurses continue to perform in the traditional role of nurses with the administration of prescribed treatments, monitoring the efficacy of those treatments, and educating patients. Additionally, psychiatric nurses engage patients and families in conversation based on therapeutic models to improve understanding of their illness and to improve function.
