Welcome to the Native American Indian & Alaskan Heritage research guide which celebrates the culture and heritage of remarkable Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation. This guide celebrates the Native American/Indian & Alaskan heritage with its wonderful diversity of American Indian and Alaska Native cultures and peoples while remembering and honoring our veterans who have sacrificed so much to defend our nation. As far back as 12,000 years ago, indigenous cultures made their home in what, today, we affectionately call Arizona. These early inhabitants settled into villages throughout the diverse regions of Arizona, giving formation to tribes such as the Ancestral Puebloans, Hohokam, Mogollon, and Patayan people.

- Native American Heritage Month - IntroductionNative American Heritage Month has evolved from its beginnings as a week-long celebration in 1986, when President Reagan proclaimed the week of November 23-30, 1986 as "American Indian Week." Every President since 1995 has issued annual proclamations designating the month of November as the time to celebrate the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of people who were the first inhabitants of the United States. Through dance, family traditions, and music, these stories show the diversity and long history of Indigenous people across the United States.
