UTEC Statement of Solidarity - Orange Shirt Day
This past summer, the remains of over 6,500 children were discovered across Canada and the United States near former residential (CA) and boarding (US) “schools”. The discovery of these remains has been heartbreaking, but it has allowed the opportunity for our children to return to their homelands and to send them on to the spirit world with respect and dignity. For the first time this year, Canada is recognizing a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th to honor residential school survivors, commemorate the legacy of these schools, and as a permanent reminder of the nation’s history. This is a significant step towards collective healing and understanding between First Nations and their government. This issue is not exclusive to Canada. As we know, the United States has its own tragic/shameful history around boarding schools. By standing in solidarity with First Nations, our hope is that the United States will follow suit in commemorating boarding school victims and survivors within our own nation.
