Establishing Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month

In 1992, Congress formally designated May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by signing Public Law 102-450. This action expanded the earlier designation of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, with significant contributions from Chinese workers.
