Intellectual Traits

1. Consider the following intellectual habits of fair minded thinkers:

  • Intellectual Integrity: Essentially, the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you: Treat others with respect and avoid being hurtful.

  • Intellectual Independence: Listen to others but let your own thinking guide your actions. In short, think for yourself.

  • Intellectual Perseverance: Seek understanding, don't give up when you don't understand. You can always improve.

  • Intellectual Empathy: Look at things from another's perspective. Be open to considering other opinions even if you ultimately disagree.

  • Intellectual Humility: No one knows everything. Admit your ignorance and ask questions when you are not sure what is true.

  • Intellectual Courage: Be willing to question your own beliefs and also to speak up respectfully for what you think is right.

  • Confidence in Reason: Use evidence to develop your thinking, not habit or fear. Use the information that is accurate and relevant to examine problems.

  • Fairmindedness: Before you act, put yourself in someone else's shoes. Think before you act. We cannot unsay unpleasant proclamations or undo hateful actions.

Which of these habits do you think you already possess?
Which of these habits do you need to develop further?
Why did you select these habits?
What do you think you can do to develop these habits further?

1. Pick a topic or question related to your area of study in STEM.

For example: What is moss made of? How do 3D printers work? What is quantum theory? What are the ethics of robots? (The options are endless; pick something that interests you!)

2. Use OneSearch, to find three articles that might be helpful for you if you were writing a paper about this topic.

3. In your journal entry: Describe the topic that you chose and why.
Include a link to the articles or the title and author of the articles and why you chose those articles instead of others.
