Measuring Time by the Sun and Moon

Tuesday 2/20/17 from 9am - 10:15am, at Southeast Corner, Library (scientific and cultural perspectives)
Jenny Weitz, will share what it means, from an astronomical perspective, to measure years from lunar cycles. There is no absolute "best" method for counting time as all systems have pluses and minuses. Lili Kang will reveal how the Lunar calendar shapes Chinese lives, (e.g.) when choosing the date of a child's conception/gender, or wedding and funeral date arrangements, cultural snacks and refreshments provided.

"PVCC Faculty and students, and community members. Lively and engaging discussion about the cultural norms, customs, intercultural dos and don'ts using Kahoot! game and group work on top of the panel discussion. Cultural snacks and refreshments provided."

 

1st Chinese Pioneer Woman in AZ

"(presentation & discussion). Dr. Li Yang, an Arizona Humanities Road Scholar in the AZ Speaks Program. She is also the recipient of the C.L. Sonnichsen Award for the best article (the topic of her presentation at PVCC, too) in the Journal of Arizona in 2004 and taught at University of Arizona, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and is now teaching at ASU. Light lunch provided."
