9th Annual Lunar New Year Review

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, sent their students and brought classes to the 9th Annual Lunar New Year event from Tuesday 2/8 to Wednesday 2/9. Eleven classes, some faculty and staff attended the 6 presentations with about 190 people, both in-person and virtually.  Special Lunar New Year-specific snacks wrapped in lucky red envelopes were passed out to participants. Students learned about various topics such as Chinese zodiacs in stamp collection, the significance of both solar and lunar calendars, globalization of food through the lens of the Lunar New Year. 55 students completed our event survey with many positive feedback as well as constructive suggestions for improvement. We look forward to hosting the event in Spring 2023!

9th Annual Lunar New Year Survey Highlights

How did this Lunar New Year session contribute to your understanding of Asian culture?

  • "I learned so much more about the lunar year , I honestly really liked it and would like to include some of the practices in my own life in my own way."
  • "It helped me, because I'm Asian. It helped me understand more about our culture."
  • "I learned that Asian culture is very focused on balance in all aspects of life, even in the holiday traditions. I also learned that there is a reason behind everything in Asian culture."
  • "It gave me a lot of knowledge. I know a little bit about the Lunar New Year since we also celebrate it in the Philippines; however, this cleared up a lot of misunderstandings that I had and it was very informative."

In what ways do you find Asian culture evident in the United States?

  • "Though I have not seen much Asian culture represented within the part of the U.S. I have been to, I am happy to participate in the celebration of the Chinese New Year. Hopefully more non-Asian people will start to celebrate this holiday as well."
  • "The population of asians in America is very high and it is important to acknowledge and recognize their influence and beliefs in the United States because as people who were not raised in the culture we should be aware."
