1. LOCATING BOOKS ON YOUR SMALL BUSINESS in the Library

1. Go to the PVCC library’s website: http://www.paradisevalley.edu/library

        and locate “Books and More” located on the left-hand column and click on it.

2. This is the catalog for the library, now type the following keywords
 “new business enterprises” (with the quotes)

3. Please answer the following questions:

How many results did you get? (look above for results): ____
 

How many books are listed in this search? (look at the left-hand column): _______
 

How many Electronic Resources are listed? (look at the left-hand column): _______

Now locate the field box above Limit Search Results which says Paradise Valley CC and choose ALL Maricopa Community College Libraries and hit the green Search button located on the right side of the search box)
 

1. Type “new business enterprises”. How many results did you get now? _______
 

2. Now type in the following search: “new business enterprises” AND restaurant (or your own business) and how many results did you get? _________


2. Locate a book on your business and write down the title of the book and the call number

3. USING ONESEARCH to locate articles and books.

  • Type “new business enterprises” AND restaurant (or your own business) and click on OneSearch.

  • Now, look at your results located on the left-hand column.
    How many results did you get? _______

  • Locate an article on your own business by choosing either a newspaper, magazine, or journal article.

  • Cut and paste your citation of the article you chose taken from the citation tools below:

4. Go to the library’s website and locate Research Guides (see left-hand column) –

1. Choose ALL GUIDES and locate the MGT253 research guide.

2. Next click on the RESEARCH tab.


5. First Research – A database where you can find out about the industry your business falls under.

1. Go to First Research database and enter a business or industry you might have an interest in.

2. If not sure what to pick, click on the Industry Profiles link located underneath the search bar and pick an industry and then pick one of the many selections listed there.

3. Supposed you have an interest in starting a “Coffee Shop”.

4. Type in “Coffee Shops” and then proceed to check out this profile.


Check out the “Industry Overview”, “Critical Issues”, “Business challenges & trends”, “Industry opportunities”, and very important think about and provide possible answers to the “Call Prep Questions”.

6. Using Sample Business Plans in GALE EBOOKS

1. Next, use the Sample Business Plans to locate a business plan example for your business.

2. Click on a Business Plans Handbook.

3. On the right-hand column do the following – click on “all volumes” & type in your business in the search box that says “within the publication” - this will help you find your business among these 44 vols. – Note: If you get no results, shorten your search terms.  i.e.  Coffee instead of Coffee Shops

4. Now, pick your business plan example and go through it – Check out the

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY, LOCATION, COMPETITION, HOURS OF OPERATION, OPPORTUNITIES, MENU, REPUTATION & FINANCIAL INFORMATION

7. USING CLARITAS.COM FOR INFO ON YOUR CUSTOMERS

1. Go to Claritas.com and locate “Explore Our Segments” tab located at the bottom of the website.

2. Next, locate ZIP Code Lookup and click on it and enter your potential business location zip code in order to learn about the demographics and lifestyles of consumer segments in your business location.

3. Now write down the lifestyle segments for this zip code area i.e.( 35 Urban Achievers, 21 The Cosmopolitan, 63 Low-Rise Living, 19 American Dreams, and 42 Multi-Culti Mosaic).

4. Also notice the Households by Income, Household Composition, Population by Age, and Population by Race & Ethnicity business information.

5. Now, click on “Segment Details” located next to ZIP Code Lookup to find out more about the lifestyle segments in your business zip code area.

6. What are you finding out about the 35 Urban Achievers? – Demographic Traits & their Lifestyle & Media Traits? How can you use this information to support your business?

7. Look at the rest of the lifestyle segments for your business zip area and determine how you could use this information to help your future business.
