What is a SWOT Analysis?

A SWOT analysis is an organizational tool used to identify or uncover strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats affecting a company or its individual departments. Organizations can use a SWOT for a variety of different reasons, but it is commonly used as a starting point for developing a strategic plan, including goals and objectives. The development of the SWOT Analysis is credited to Albert Humphrey as a result of his work at the Stanford Research Institute. It was first designed as a team method for planning. The acronym SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats and Trends (SWOTT) - Encyclopedia of Sports Management and Marketing
